It’s a sad moment when anyone from the metal scene leaves us, but for fans of All That Remains, the death of Oli Herbert is especially sad. Dying aged 44 on the 16th of October 2018 Herbert had been with the band since its inception in 1998 and performed on all nine of their studio albums, including the newly released ‘Victim of the New Disease’.
Writing on their social media accounts, ‘Oli Herbert, our friend, guitar player, and founding member of All That Remains, has passed away’. Continuing, ‘Oli was an incredibly talented guitarist and songwriter who defined rock and metal from the northeast. His impact on the genres and our lives will continue indefinitely’.
Moved by the fans reaction and support, his wife Beth issued the following statement, ‘Hello everyone this is Beth, Oli’s widow. Thank you all for the kind thoughts and words. I don’t want to go into what happened until we have a complete picture, but as soon as we do there will be a statement from the family on this page. In the meantime, please respect our privacy as there are still relatives being informed of Oli’s passing. Thank you’.
And by way of an update, on the 10th of November Beth revealed Oli’s cause of death on his Facebook page noting, that the cause of death was drowning. Additionally, Beth also released the toxicology results, ‘Toxicology- Oli was apparently self-treating for manic-depression that has run in his family for several generations. Anti-depressants were found in his system, as well as a sleep aid. The psych meds found in his system were the same ones that a close relative has been prescribed for a long time, so he knew what to hunt down for the 'treatment'. Seeing how he was not going (and WOULDN'T GO) to a doctor to get diagnosed with the issue and was not being prescribed the medications and monitored on them, it explains his occasional erratic behavior here at home’.
Our thoughts and condolences go out the family and friends and we at Metal Mashup thank Oli for all he has contributed to the scene.
